“It’s time to wake up! This is the 3rd time I have had to come in here....you are going to be late!”
“Don’t forget to brush your teeth!”
“Did you remember your lunch?“
“Remember, you have to stay after for practice today.”
“Ugh....”
Sound familiar? I am sure I am not the only one out there that has some anxiety about their kids going back to school this year.
This year will be especially challenging, or at a minimum very different! I definitely don’t envy those in leadership roles in education that have had to determine how to best balance the learning options for our kids, while also keeping them safe. I also applaud our hard working teachers who now have to completely change the way they are accustomed to teaching, some of which have been doing so for the same way for many, many years. I am so appreciative of the many that place such a large role in educating my children.
As a parent, I have struggled with the best way for me to play a role in guiding my kids through this situation, while also balancing a demanding job. I will be in the house with them while they do their schoolwork, but will have a hard time keeping them on track with their schedules and helping them, while I am trying to log in to back to back meetings and keep caught up with hundreds of emails and other work demands. I can’t even begin to imagine having to balance that with having younger kids, and particularly those in elementary school.
I have heard more than one person say that you can't be a great parent and also be a great employee - there are so many sacrifices on either end to do the other well that you are either mediocre at both, or you must fail at one to be good at the other.
Not true! Although I can see why some would think that way, I don't believe that has to be the case. I can see why it would be even harder to accomplish in our current circumstances, but I have seen others be successful and believe that we can be too! In fact, I would go as far to say that being a parent while balancing a career can make you better at both! Parenting teaches you many skills you need to be successful in the workforce; patience, time management, communication, etc., and you set a great example for your kids while they are learning by seeing your good work ethic, making sound decisions, and observing the way you balance and home activities.
I believe that this unusual time period we are going through is happening for a reason. What reason could that possibly be? I can’t say for sure. What I do know, is that I am thankful to have an opportunity to spend more time with my kids, and I think they are learning some new skills that may be very relevant for them as they move into a working world in the future. I am sure there are other positive outcomes of this that we could identity if we tried. We can’t control the situation, so all we can do is make the very best of it!
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7.
There is no reason to worry! You just have to keep your faith in that all will work itself out.
We’ve got this!! 🙌
